If your Ubuntu system boots using UEFI, press&nbsp;<kbd>Esc<\/kbd> instead. You might have to press the key multiple times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When you get to the Grub Menu, edit the line that starts with <code>linux<\/code> by adding any one of these to the end of the line:<br \/><code>s<\/code> (lower case s)<code><br \/>S<\/code> (upper case s)<code><br \/>1<\/code> (number 1)<br \/>If the system is using systemd, add one of these to the end of the line that starts with <code>linux<\/code> and use the key sequence that is listed at the bottom to boot the new configuration (usually ,<code>&lt;ctrl&gt;X<\/code> or <code>F10<\/code>):<br \/><code>systemd.target=rescue.target<\/code><br \/><code>rescue<\/code><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since single user mode gives you root access to the system, it is a good idea to require the root password when booting into it. To do this, <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If the system is using systemd, edit the <code>ExecStart<\/code> line in both <code>\/lib\/systemd\/system\/rescue.service<\/code> and <code>\/lib\/systemd\/system\/emergency.service<\/code> by changing <code>sushell<\/code> to <code>sulogin<\/code>.
